The hamlet of Robin Hood:
The hamlet of Robin Hood sits in a natural amphitheatre on the eastern side of the Cromford canal close to Whatstandwell. The tower is now the eighth dwelling, having been renovated from an original industrial building dating back to the mid nineteenth century when the quarrying and export of local stone was at its height. The early part of the twentieth century saw the arrival of basket weaving to the hamlet, before the buildings became residential, and very much as you’ll see them today.
We’re often asked how the name came about, and our research, so far, takes us back to 1811 when Peter Nightingale, Great Uncle to Florence, gave a lease to Joseph Wass for a stone loading wharf, mineral railway and smithy on the Cromford canal at “Robin Hood”.
The hamlet is flanked on its Southern edge by Oxhay brook which descends steeply from the moors at Crich, before commencing a terraced descent at Robin Hood, passing through two stone lined tunnels by Robin Hood Tower. Between these two is a waterfall, a vertical drop of some 30 feet inside a stone lined chamber so that the stream can pass under the canal and into the River Derwent. This is very impressive, and it’s all just a few metres from the Tower!
As you open the main door of the Tower and step outside you will experience the sight and sound of water and woodland and the wildlife they support. The garden at The Old Sawmill, adjacent to the Tower, will take you onto the canal wharf, and into the Cromford canal Site of Special Scientific Interest, SSSI. Your hosts, Steve and Elaine, help to maintain this stretch of canal and woodland, and have lots of suggestions for local walks and activities.
Robin Hood Tower is ideally situated for a short break in the Peak District, whether it’s for walking, cycling and outdoor pursuits, or to visit the many stately homes, industrial heritage sites and places of outstanding natural beauty that are well within easy reach. You could, of course, come and stay for a little bit of peace and quiet, a log fire and a good book!
The ground floor living room has access from the outside via two double opening patio doors onto an attractive wood effect, porcelain tiled floor that is also very hygienic. The room is decorated in neutral colours with woodland themed accents and rustic ceiling beams.
Seating is provided by a two-seat settee, and single seat armchair.
A log burning fire is a central feature point of the room along
The first floor is home to the kitchen dining area.
The kitchen has a cooker, fridge, microwave, breakfast bar and stools. We also provide some basic food items for your arrival; however, if you’re short of anything, or need some suggestions on where to pick up some groceries then please let us know. If it’s a bottle of wine or beer or a microwaveable meal, and you don’t fancy the drive to a sho
The bedroom is on the second floor, and it's from here that you'll find the best views from the tower of woodland and canal. There is a double bed, mirror, chest of drawers with hair-drier, and two storage shelves for bags and cases
Adjoining the bedroom you will find the ensuite bathroom which is home to a spacious walk in power shower, handwash basin, heated towel rail and toilet.
Outside is an attractive stone patio area with a table and chairs just a few feet from Oxhay brook. The area has external lighting and is afforded privacy from The Old Sawmill dwelling via large planters.
Free parking is available at the property. The spacious designated on site parking is available adjacent to the tower and there is a double outside power point, suitable for charging an electric vehicle.
We are very dog friendly, having two dogs of our own. We've even designed and built a dog washing, bike and boot washing facility outside; and there are lots of great dog walking opportunities starting from right outside the Tower. The hamlet of Robin Hood has changed very little for over a century; and there are very few fences or boundaries, so we simply ask that you respect our neighbours by keeping dogs safe and under control.
If you wish to bring along your dog a charge of £20 is payable per booking. Payment can be made by bank transfer or cash on arrival.
Access to the Cromford canal towpath is only a few minutes walk, straight into woodland from the tower. You’ll soon become acquainted with our resident ducks, moorhens and swans etc. Access to the Cromford canal footpath is less than two minutes walk from the Tower and offers flat walking for many miles as it winds though areas of local history, breath taking scenery and nature.
